WATCH | Sports tournament aims to tackle crime in Edendale

The uMgungundlovu District Municipality has pledged to strengthen its partnership with law enforcement agencies by using sport as a tool to unite communities and steer young people away from criminal activity. The commitment was made during the media briefing for the second annual Sport Against Crime Tournament, held at Plessislaer Police Station on Monday, ahead of this weekend’s event. The games will take place on Saturday at the Ashdown Sports Ground and are expected to draw teams and supporters from across the district.

Addressing members of the media, uMgungundlovu District Municipality head of communications Brian Zuma said the municipality remains committed to supporting initiatives that contribute to safer communities. “The district has always been vocal about fighting crime. We fully endorse this tournament and it will receive the municipality’s support,” Zuma said.

He said sport has the power to unite communities, build positive relationships between residents and law enforcement, and provide young people with alternatives to crime and substance abuse. Plessislaer SAPS Visible Policing Commander Lieutenant Colonel Sphamandla Welcome Maphumulo said the station continues to face significant crime challenges, with Plessislaer consistently ranking among the country’s top 30 police stations for reported crime. Maphumulo said alcohol abuse remains one of the biggest contributors to violent crime and other offences in the policing precinct. He said police believe community-based initiatives, such as the Sport Against Crime Tournament, can play an important role in crime prevention by encouraging residents to reclaim public spaces and strengthen relationships with police.
