Police seize R20 950 in counterfeit goods in KaNyamazane raid

A multi-agency law enforcement operation targeting counterfeit and illicit goods in KaNyamazane has resulted in the seizure of illegal products worth R20 950, the closure of a non-compliant warehouse, and the arrest of 13 undocumented foreign nationals.

According to Mpumalanga police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo, the joint operation was conducted on Friday, July 31, and was led by the Mpumalanga Counterfeit Task Team with support from several law enforcement agencies and government departments.

Team recovers illicit cigarettes and fake creams

“The operation brought together members of the SAPS’ Crime Intelligence, Tactical Response Team, Pienaar Public Order Policing Unit, White River K9 Unit, the Department of Home Affairs, and environmental health practitioners from the Ehlanzeni District Municipality,” Masondo said.

“Acting on a search and seizure warrant, the team searched a wholesale warehouse in KaNyamazane where they recovered 419 packets of illicit cigarettes and more than 10 000 counterfeit skin-lightening creams and medication.”

He added that police also arrested 13 undocumented foreign nationals found in possession of invalid passports.

Officials close non-compliant warehouse

Following an inspection, the warehouse was served with a permanent closure notice in terms of applicable health and safety regulations after officials found that it did not comply with required standards.

The operation forms part of ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to clamp down on the sale and distribution of counterfeit and illicit goods, which pose serious health risks to consumers and negatively affect legitimate businesses and the economy.

Investigations into the matter are continuing.
