Agreement signed to create the Academia Mozambique LNG

The Agreement commits USD 3 million, close to 200 million meticais, to prepare 260 young Mozambican technical graduates for production and maintenance work in LNG operations. Selected candidates will spend a year at the Institute in Matola, followed by 3 years of hands-on training at the Afungi site. The first pathway will be delivered through this partnership and is dedicated to young Mozambican technical graduates.

On top of this partnership, the Project will also support the strengthening of facilities, LNG training materials and equipment, curriculum development and training of the existing selected teachers at the Industrial and Commercial Institute of Matola. In parallel, Mozambique LNG is developing a second pathway for experienced Mozambican professionals, in Mozambique and abroad, whose expertise, including from other industrial sectors, can contribute to the future operation of the plant. The training will be delivered in accordance with international LNG industry standards.

Candidates will be selected through a nationwide recruitment process, beginning with an open online assessment accessible across the country. Selected candidates will spend a year at the Institute in Matola, followed by hands-on training at the Project site in Afungi, in Cabo Delgado. The training prepares them for production and maintenance work in a plant that will operate for decades.

At the occasion, Léo Jamal, Secretary of State of Technical and Vocational Training said: “We thank Mozambique LNG for the trust placed in our technical and vocational institutions. This agreement trains our instructors and upgrades the Institute’s facilities, so that young Mozambicans are trained to the quality and the standard this industry demands,” . With this partnership, the Mozambique LNG Project confirms its commitment to socioeconomic development and adds to the contribution already made to local content development where more than 9,000 Mozambican workers are already contributing to the construction of the Project, and about 500 micro, small and medium enterprises are supported through capacity-building initiatives.

Additionally, more than 1,700 young Mozambicans have already received technical training, in work with government institutions and training partners. Mozambique LNG is the first onshore development of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant in the country. The project includes the development of the Golfinho and Atum fields located within Offshore Area 1 and the construction of a two-trains liquefaction plant with a capacity of 13.12 million tonnes per year.

Area 1 contains approximately up to 65 Tcf of gas resources, of which 18 Tcf will be developed with the first two trains. TotalEnergies EP Mozambique Area 1 Limitada, a wholly owned subsidiary of TotalEnergies SE, operates the Mozambique LNG project with a 26.5% stake, together with Mitsui E&P Mozambique Area1 Limited (20%), ENH Rovuma Area 1, SA (15%), ONGC Videsh Rovuma Limited (10%), Beas Rovuma Energy Mozambique Limited (10%), BPRL Ventures Mozambique BV (10%), and PTTEP Mozambique Area 1 Limited (8.5%).
