Weekend weather: Cold conditions grip SA while KZN faces wind and rain

South Africa is set for a cold and mostly dry weekend, with the South African Weather Service issuing a Yellow Level 2 warning for damaging winds and rough sea conditions along parts of the KwaZulu-Natal coast. South Africans can expect largely fine but chilly weather this weekend, with the South African Weather Service warning of strong winds and rough sea conditions along parts of the KwaZulu-Natal coastline, while isolated rain is forecast for the province’s eastern coastal areas. A Yellow Level 2 warning remains in place for damaging coastal winds and waves between KwaDukuza and Kosi Bay until Sunday afternoon.

The conditions could make navigation difficult, disrupt small harbours and ports, and place small vessels at risk of capsizing. A separate Yellow Level 2 warning has also been issued for damaging interior winds over north-eastern KwaZulu-Natal, where localised damage to settlements is possible. Saturday is expected to be mostly fine across the country, with cool to cold conditions dominating inland provinces including Gauteng, the Free State and parts of the Eastern Cape.

Limpopo, Mpumalanga and North West will experience generally fine weather, although some cloud cover is expected in places. KwaZulu-Natal will be the only province with a meaningful chance of rainfall. The weather service forecasts a 30% chance of isolated showers and rain along the coast and adjacent interior from the afternoon, with cloudier conditions developing in the east.

Morning fog is also expected over the central and western interior of the province. The Western Cape is forecast to remain fine and cool to warm, while the Northern Cape will be dry, apart from evening fog along the coast. Parts of the Eastern Cape can expect morning fog and frost in the interior before conditions clear later in the day.

Looking ahead to Sunday, cool conditions will persist across much of the country. Isolated rainfall remains possible along the KwaZulu-Natal coast and adjacent areas, while most inland regions are expected to stay dry under partly cloudy to fine skies.
