Gaborone-based hyperrealism artist Martin Sefako, is earning recognition through his striking graphite and charcoal portraits that combine emotional realism with conceptual storytelling. A graduate of Architecture from the University of Botswana, Sefako said art had always been his true calling despite his academic background. He said his work draws inspiration from a wide range of aspects, with each portrait designed to evoke emotion while conveying a deeper symbolic message.

Among his most celebrated works is a conceptual portrait of Botswana sprint sensation Collen Kebinatshipi, portrayed with metallic robotic legs to symbolise speed, endurance and the country’s progressive spirit. He said he aspired to establish international exhibitions, create mentorship platforms and eventually open a gallery dedicated to nurturing emerging artists across the continent. Despite the growing success, Sefako said artists continued to face challenges, including limited funding, inadequate institutional support and the persistent undervaluation of creative work.

He called for greater investment in the arts, saying the creative industry should be recognised as a key contributor to Botswana’s economy, youth development and national identity. As Botswana prepares to celebrate its 60th Independence anniversary, Sefako said he planned to produce conceptual artworks reflecting the country’s resilience, cultural pride and youth excellence. He also encouraged aspiring artists to remain consistent, cultivate their own artistic identity and balance creativity with sound business skills. Art enthusiasts have praised Sefako’s work for its exceptional realism and emotional depth.
