Aberdare Cables celebrates milestone

Power cable manufacturer Aberdare Cables is celebrating 80 years in operation, cementing its position as one of South Africa’s long-standing industrial players while reaffirming the strategic importance of its Pietermaritzburg plant, which employs more than 400 people. The milestone comes as the company highlighted continued investment in local manufacturing. Aberdare’s sales and logistics executive director, Mishack Matla, said the anniversary was both a rare achievement in the cable manufacturing sector and an opportunity for reflection.

“There aren’t many companies in this industry that have existed for this long. We are taking time to pause, reflect and celebrate this milestone, while recognising the position we hold as a market leader,” said Matla. He said the company remained confident about its future, citing growth opportunities and a strong foundation built on its core values.

“We believe Aberdare will remain a strong player in the years ahead, supported by the values thatguide how we operate,” he said. Matla said quality remained central to the company’s operations. “Quality is non-negotiable.

Compliance with compulsory standards to ensure we manufacture safe and legal products is equally non-negotiable. Our customers and stakeholders can attest to this commitment,” he said. The Pietermaritzburg plant produces a range of power cables including low-voltage Aerial Bundled Conductors (ABC), elastomeric cables, and nitrile welding cables.

Aberdare Cables has contributed to major developments in KwaZulu-Natal, including the supply of cables for the construction of King ShakaInternational Airport. The company said the 80-year milestone also provided an opportunity to reinforce its presence in the market and remind customers of its capabilities. “We want the South African market to understand what Aberdare represents and to know that our products are available to support infrastructure and development projects,” Matla said.
