Western Cape police are investigating a mass shooting that left four people dead and four others, including two police officers, wounded in Kayamandi, Stellenbosch, on Sunday evening. The shooting unfolded at about 5.35 pm when officers from Stellenbosch SAPS responded to reports of a shooting in 7th Avenue, where they found an unidentified man who had been fatally shot. While processing the scene, officers heard more gunfire nearby and rushed to investigate.
As they approached the area, they were confronted by armed suspects who opened fire on them. Police returned fire, forcing the suspects to flee. During the exchange, two SAPS members and two civilians – a man and a woman – were shot and taken to hospital for treatment.
Police later discovered four unidentified men with fatal gunshot wounds at the scenes. A 9mm firearm was recovered and seized for forensic analysis, while crime scene experts worked through the night collecting evidence. Detectives attached to the Western Cape Provincial Serious and Violent Crime Unit have opened four counts of murder and four counts of attempted murder.
