Government has commissioned two dams, Lunyike and Feni, in Luangeni Constituency of Chipata District, valued at over K33 Million. Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation Permanent Secretary, Romas Kamanga, says the total value for Lunyike Dam is K16, 658, 555.12, while Feni Dam cpst K16, 990, 431. 26 The Permanent Secretary explained that Lunyike Dam was a special request from the late Paramount Chief Mpezeni to have it rehabilitated for the betterment of his subjects.
He further indicated that both dams will benefit a population of at least 35,300 people and 21,000 livestock. “You may wish to note that the Lunyike Dam will directly benefit approximately 9,000 people, while the Feni Dam will directly benefit more than 34,400 people. In addition, the dams will provide reliable water for approximately 6,000 livestock at Lunyike and 15,000 livestock at Feni,” he mentioned.
Eastern Province Permanent Secretary, Paul Thole, who was represented by Eastern Province Director of Finance, Vincent Sampa, said government is putting up measures to ensure water is valued at all costs. Mr Thole said projects like the ones just commissioned, ensure that members of the public are empowered. He has urged benefiting communities to maximise the availability of the water bodies in their areas.
