Veteran coach Pitso Mosimane has confirmed that theSouth African Football Association (Safa)has held discussions with him as part of its succession planning for the Bafana Bafana head coach position. Mosimane’s revelation comes as uncertainty continues to surroundthe future of incumbent coach Hugo Broos, whose contract expires at the end of the month.

Broos recently indicated in an interview in his native Belgium that his tenure as Bafana coach had come to an end, despite guiding South Africa to back-to-back Africa Cup of Nations appearances and a historicRound-of-32 finish at the Fifa World Cup. Safa, however, swiftly dismissed reports that the Belgian had left his post, insisting he remains the national team coach. This week, reports emerged that Broos could be offered a one-year contract extension while the association identifies a long-term successor, although Safa has also denied those claims.

The conflicting messages have left the future of the national team coaching position unresolved. Speaking at the launch of his Youth Football Coaching Manual in Johannesburg on Thursday, Mosimane revealed that Safa had approached several coaches to discuss the future direction of the national team. “I don’t know when the contract [of Broos] ends.
