Scorchers coach Lovemore Fazili has admitted that his team’s performance against Ghana in a friendly match on Thursday night, was aweful. The Malawi Women’s National Football Team was clobbered 4-0 in their final preparatory match for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) in Morocco. “Honestly, the performance wasn’t good, but we also made several changes to give other players a chance to gain confidence,” he said.

“Players like Leticia Chinyamula, Ireen Khumalo and Tabitha Chawinga were not in the starting line up so that we could see other players. “We were trying to find combinations through these players. We also gave a chance to goalkeeper Yamikani Kaonga, Olivia Phikani, Chisomo Banda and Tendai Sani, just to mention a few.” Nevertheless, the coach admitted that a win could have been a timely morale booster ahead of their opening match against holders and record 10-time African champions, Nigeria’s Super Falcons.

Fazili said they drew lessons from the defeat at Municipal de Berrechid Stadium in Morocco on Tuesday afternoon. Ghana took control of the match through Doris Boaduwaa, who scored a hat-trick, before Sharon Esinam Sampson added the fourth goal late in the second half.
