Suliman Carrim seeks to halt the Madlanga Commission’s subpoena, claiming his rights are being violated amidst serious allegations of influence-peddling. Madlanga Commission has reserved its ruling on whether North West businessman Suliman Carrim should receive an indefinite postponement from testifying after explosive evidence suggested he spent more time outside a medical facility than inside it. Commission chairperson Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga declined to deliver an immediate decision after hearing submissions from both legal teams on Friday.

“The ruling will be made at a date to be announced,” Madlanga said. The commissionheard that geo-location data painted a picture that appeared to contradict claims that Carrim is too ill to testify. Evidence leader Advocate Adila Hassim SC told the commission that an analysis of maps and geo-location records showed Carrim regularly left the medical facility, often for extended periods.

“The analysis of the maps and the geo-location data shows that almost every single day Carrim leaves the facility and that on most days he is out of the facility for at least eight hours, sometimes longer,” Hassim said. Hassim added that Carrim’s wife acknowledged the accuracy of the geo-location data in an affidavit filed before the commission. “I accept that the geo-location data generally reflects my husband’s movements.

I do not dispute the accuracy of the data or seek to explain it away,” the affidavit states. Despite the commission’s concerns, Carrim’s legal representative, Advocate Kameel Premhid, maintained that hisclient’s inability to testify remains a medical matter. Although August 14 had previously been suggested as a possible return date, Premhid told the commission that Carrim is now seeking an indefinite postponement. He also opposed the use of CCTV footage, arguing it was irrelevant to the central issue before the commission.
