A 22-year-old high school pupil has been arrested in Bloemfontein and charged with assault after a viral video shows a 21-year-old student teacher being attacked, allegedly by him. TheWitnessreports that Free State police confirmed that the woman who was attacked opened a case of common assault at Kagisanong police station, which led to the suspect’s arrest after further investigation. Earlier, police had said no arrests had been made and that investigators were still gathering evidence.

Following the continued investigation, the suspect was arrested and is expected to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court tomorrow (June 12). Police have appealed for calm while the investigation continues. “The SAPS views all acts of violence, particularly against the vulnerable, in a serious light and is committed to ensuring that justice is served.” Authorities said further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.

The faculty of education student’s council at the University of the Free State welcomed the arrest, describing it as an important step towards justice for the student. “As the representative body of education students, we welcome the swift action taken by law enforcement authorities,” the council said in a statement. The council said it remains committed to supporting the affected student and advocating for the safety, dignity and well-being of student teachers during teaching practice placements.
