Joburg Mayoral Candidate Herman Mashaba on the ground in Hillbrow. ActionSA mayoral candidate for the City of Johannesburg, and former mayor, Herman Mashaba, said that ‘people of Johannesburg are not that stupid’ to vote for his competitor and Democratic Alliance Mayoral Candidate, Helen Zille. Mashaba was on hand for the party’s comprehensive review of the Government of National Unity (GNU), which will mark two years since its formation on Sunday.
The evaluation of the GNU’s performance is intended to measure its delivery against commitments made to South Africans and highlight areas of progress and concern. The ActionSA president was joined by National Chairperson Michael Beaumont, Parliamentary Leader Athol Trollip MP, Parliamentary Chief Whip Lerato Ngobeni MP, and all party Members of Parliament. Speaking of his mayoral campaign, Mashaba said that the party had originally intended to find their own Dr Nasiphi Moya – City of Tshwane mayor – for the City of Johannesburg, but that when they looked at the City of Johannesburg for the most experienced person, “unfortunately, it became an obvious choice”.
“I had no real choice, and my colleagues and residents of the City of Johannesburg pushed me into accepting that responsibility, and I accepted it with grace. If I look at my competitors, honestly, it’s a great opportunity for ActionSA, because of the 3 years I have served the residents of the City of Johannesburg.
