Mozambique: Finance Minister receives UNICEF and Millennium BIM representatives in Maputo

The Minister of Finance, Carla Loveira, today received in separate courtesy audiences the Resident Representative of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Mozambique, Mary Louise Eagleton, and João Nuno Palma, together with representatives of Millennium BIM. In her remarks, the Minister of Finance thanked the United Nations for its unwavering humanitarian support to populations affected by floods in the provinces of Maputo, Gaza and Sofala, as well as the international emergency appeal launched by Ms Catherine Sozi, United Nations Resident Coordinator in Mozambique, to mobilise US$187 million to support 700,000 flood victims. UNICEF has proven to be an essential pillar for child development in the country and across priority sectors of the economy, particularly human capital development and public financial management, the Minister emphasised.

The Finance Minister expressed the Government’s desire for Mozambique to continue benefiting from UNICEF’s contribution to national development efforts, particularly in the areas of child health and education, with a view to ensuring sustainable economic development. She also expressed satisfaction with Millennium BIM’s contribution to national economic growth, highlighting the operationalisation of the sovereign wealth fund, the recruitment of consultants to support the debt strategy, and the agreement with the World Bank to finance structural projects.
