More than 21,000 runners are expected to participate in the 2026 Comrades Marathon, with police, traffic authorities, private security and marshals deployed to ensure a safe event. KwaZulu-Natal police have declared the entireComrades Marathonroute a no-fly zone and warned that any unauthorised drones will be taken down as part of extensive security measures for the 2026 race. KwaZulu-Natal policespokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said the Provincial Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (PROVJOINTS) had put comprehensive safety and security plans in place to ensure an incident-free event as more than 21,000 runners prepare to take part in the 99th edition of the Ultimate Human Race.

“The entire Comrades Marathon route has been declared a no-fly zone and only authorised operational aircraft and drones will be permitted to fly,” said Netshiunda. “Any unauthorised drone will be taken down operationally in accordance with the law.” Netshiunda said that various departments and entities that form part of PROVJOINTS had been meeting for months and had developed a comprehensive operational plan to ensure the safety and security of runners, officials, and spectators throughout the event. “Over 21 000 runners will participate in the 2026 UpRun Comrades Marathon, the 99th edition of the Ultimate Human Race,” he said.

He added that the Comrades Marathon Association, working together witheThekwini Metroand uMgungundlovu traffic officials, had already communicated road closures and urged road users to cooperate with law enforcement officers during the marathon weekend. Netshiunda also warned that authorities would act against the displaying of banners carrying “unsavoury and or politically-aligned messages” on bridges, road signs, and buildings. “The displaying of banners depicting unsavoury and or politically-aligned messages on bridges, road signs and buildings will be dealt with in compliance with municipal bylaws and other statutes,” he said.

Police have also intensified security measures following incidents reported during the 2025 Comrades Marathon. Netshiunda said several motor vehicle thefts and thefts from vehicles were reported during last year’s race, and police had since identified hotspot areas.
