Mutare: THE country’s third-largest city, is bracing for a weekend economic boom as football giants Dynamos roll into town to face Manica Diamonds at Sakubva Stadium on Sunday. But beyond the final whistle, it is the promise of surging economic activity that has the Mountain City buzzing. Dynamos commands a loyal army of at least 2 million supporters nationwide. When the capital’s finest descend on Mutare, they bring more than just football fever but trigger a cascade of spending that lifts all sectors.
From accommodation and transport to retail and nightlife, prices are expected to climb as demand outstrips supply. “Retailers, lodges, hotels, vendors, transporters, and even commercial sex workers will have a knee-jerk reaction and hike prices when Dynamos comes to town,” said Sean Beta, a Mutare-based businessman. “The team’s supporters are incredibly loyal and follow the team everywhere, like Tunzi the faithful shadow.” Interestingly, an old age adage say the higher you go the cooler it becomes, Mutare’s sex traders are promising distinctly “warm nights.” What makes this fixture particularly lucrative is the local fanbase.
Manica Diamonds draws passionate support from Chiadzwa’s diamond fields known as a crowd known of deep pockets and an even deeper love for the beautiful game. These big-spending, football-crazy fans are expected to match Dynamos’ followers pound for pound, further driving up prices on everything from match-day transport to premium seating and refreshments. “This jamboree will not be like the Chahwanda horror,” warned one Manica Diamonds fan. “We will humble Dynamos peacefully at Sakubva.” Whether the hosts claim victory on the pitch or not, one thing is certain: for Mutare’s informal and formal traders alike, the real winner this weekend will be the local economy.
