Speaking ahead of the awards ceremony, Botswana’s Minister of Sport and Arts, Jacob Kelebeng said the country has a lot to celebrate following strong performances by local athletes in regional and international competitions. Kelebeng said the awards come at the right time after what he described as a fruitful year for Botswana sport. He said athletes and teams performed well in different competitions and many also secured qualifications for major international events.
“This year we are going to have exciting awards. We had a lot of achievement across all sporting codes, and we had a lot of qualifications into international events. We also had success in terms of winning those international competitions.” Botswana athletes have continued to raise the country’s flag high in athletics, football, boxing, karate, chess and several other sporting codes.
The performances have increased excitement around this year’s awards, with many supporters expected to follow closely to see who walks away with the top honours. Kelebeng said the awards are not only about winners on the night, but also about recognising the effort and commitment shown by all nominees throughout the year. “It is really exciting to go for awards after a fruitful year,” he said.
