The IFP has suspended its KwaZulu-Natal Youth Brigade (IFPYB) provincial chairperson Mncedisi Maphisa amid allegations that he was sowing divisions within the organisation. Maphisa’s suspension, which was announced by the party on Wednesday, follows the emergence of a controversial voice recording in which he is allegedly heard discussing plans to disrupt internal party processes. After affording Maphisa the opportunity to explain the voice recording, the IFP national executive committee (NEC), which convened a special meeting on Tuesday night, resolved to remove him from all party activities and responsibilities with immediate effect, pending the outcome of disciplinary proceedings.
“Having received formal correspondence from Cde Maphisa confirming that it is indeed his voice in the recording, and having considered all material facts presently before it, the NEC resolved to suspend him from all party activities and responsibilities with immediate effect,” IFP national spokesperson Mkhuleko Hlengwa, said. The suspension strips Maphisa of his duties as provincial IFPYB chairperson and as a member of the party’s national council. Hlengwa said the matter would now be referred to the National Council, which is expected to preside over formal disciplinary processes.
“The NEC will continue to investigate the matter and will present a comprehensive report to the national council for its consideration as part of the disciplinary process,” he said. The NEC also suspended another party member, Lindi Ndlovu, also barring her from all party-related activities pending disciplinary action. “The NEC further cautions all IFP members, leaders, and structures against divisive, irresponsible and reckless conduct that brings the party into disrepute and undermines unity within the organisation,” Hlengwa said.
