The Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) has reminded radio and television stations to ensure all music and accompanying visuals aired on their platforms align with Zambian cultural values, norms, and public expectations. In a statement issued to by IBA Director of Corporate Communications, Katendi Wandi, said music remains a powerful form of expression that can shape attitudes, especially among young audiences. Ms Wandi encouraged broadcasters to apply sound editorial judgement in the selection and scheduling of musical content.
She cited Section 24(1)(a) of the IBA (Amendment) Act of 2010, which requires programming to reflect the culture, character, needs, and aspirations of the Zambian people. “In this regard, broadcasters are expected to ensure that the content aired is not only entertaining but also culturally appropriate and consistent with applicable laws and audience expectations, “she said. Ms Wandi singled out television stations, urging them to preview both local and acquired music videos and films before broadcast to determine their suitability for the general audience. She also called on local content producers to ensure that productions intended for broadcast align with Zambian cultural values and legal requirements.
