Msunduzi Municipality has urged residents to take immediate precautions following a Level 4 severe weather warning issued by the South African Weather Service, effective from Tuesday, May 5, to Wednesday, May 6, 2026. Widespread and severe thunderstorms are expected across KwaZulu-Natal, with the Msunduzi area among those likely to be affected. The municipality added that the forecast includes heavy downpours, strong and damaging winds, excessive lightning and possible hail.

“These conditions pose a significant risk to life, property and infrastructure, and may lead to localised flooding in low-lying areas, as well as on roads and bridges.” Motorists have been warned to exercise extreme caution, as poor visibility and slippery road conditions are expected. Residents are advised to reduce speed, keep a safe following distance and avoid unnecessary travel. Communities in flood-prone and low-lying areas, including informal settlements, are urged to take preventative measures to protect lives and property.

Where possible, residents should remain indoors during severe weather conditions. Municipal disaster management teams and emergency services are on high alert and ready to respond to incidents. Residents are also warned not to attempt crossing flooded roads, rivers or streams, particularly where water levels exceed ankle height. With colder weather setting in, the municipality has cautioned against the unsafe use of heating devices such as braziers and generators, and reminded residents not to leave children unattended near heating equipment.
