Super League of Malawi (Sulom) says Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe will host the FDH Premiership Blantyre derby between Mighty Wanderers and their arch-rivals FCB Nyasa Bullets this Sunday. The change of venue follows the barring of the two Blantyre-based giants’ home ground, Kamuzu Stadium, due to safety and sanitation gaps. Sulom general secretary Williams Banda also said the match will be used as a launch game for the 2026 FDH Premiership.

Initially, the opening game was supposed to feature champions Wanderers and Karonga United on April 25 as part of the launch which was postponed due to a stand-off between Sulom and Football Association of Malawi (FAM) on the state of the stadium. “The Blantyre derby will be played at Bingu National Stadium and we will use it as a launch game,” said Banda. He also said all the relevant stakeholders have since been communicated to.

Wanderers, who are the host side, confirmed having been informed about the development. “We were waiting to hear from Sulom and we will not proceed accordingly,” said one of the club’s directors. Bullets acting-chief executive officer Albert Chigoga said: “As a visiting team, we are fine with the choice of venue.” Meanwhile, Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture, owners of Kamuzu Stadium, have said they are yet to invite FAM to inspect the facility after completing the works.
