A new initiative blending conservation and community support is offering hope for wildlife in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands. FreeMe Wildlife has launched its own signature wine, with proceeds set to support the expansion of its small predator enclosures and facilities. The idea was sparked during a visit to Highgate Wine Estate, where FreeMe Wildlife CEO and small carnivore specialist Wade Whitehead saw an opportunity for collaboration.
Discussions began last year and culminated in the launch of a medium-bodied cabernet sauvignon this month, which goes well with light meat dishes and cheeses. Whitehead said the initiative highlights the importance of local support. “Funds raised from the wine will go towards expanding our facilities, which is the next step in strengthening our rehabilitation work,” he said.
He added that partnerships like this create shared value. It’s a win-win. The public enjoys a locally produced wine, the estate supports a public benefit organisation, and our work with wildlife receives much-needed support.

FreeMe Wildlife, founded in 2007, focuses on the rescue, rehabilitation and release of indigenous wildlife, operating a 24-hour rescue service across the Midlands. Tammy Caine, raptor specialist for the centre, said while international backing has been valuable, local involvement remains critical.
