Kernisha Hunzwi Accused of Using Child in Bid for Financial Gain After Divorce

A Harare woman, Kernisha Sheila Hunzwi, is facing criminal charges alongside medical practitioner Dr. Micky Kondo in a case that prosecutors say centers on an attempt to use a child as leverage to obtain money following a divorce. According to the State, the dispute began after a High Court ruling formally ended Hunzwi’s marriage.

Authorities allege that, instead of accepting the outcome, she sought to pursue further financial benefit by using the couple’s child to pressure her former husband. Prosecutors claim that as part of this effort, Hunzwi approached Dr. Kondo and allegedly paid US$500 for a consultation, despite having no prior relationship with him.

It is further alleged that she obtained a medical letter intended to support her position in ongoing custody-related disputes. The State argues that the letter was meant to strengthen claims against the child’s father and create grounds for financial demands. Investigators also allege that Hunzwi approached multiple doctors in search of documentation that could assist her case.

Kondo has denied any involvement in producing the disputed letter, stating that he did not author it and had no prior knowledge of the individuals involved. Both Hunzwi and Dr. Kondo have been charged with fraud and defeating the ends of justice.

They are expected to appear in court on 3 April as the matter proceeds to trial. Prosecutors say the case highlights concerns over the misuse of children in personal disputes, particularly where financial motives are alleged to be at play.
