The running community has come together in grief and remembrance following the death of Westville Athletic Club runner Kevan McCarogher. McCarogher had completed eight Comrades Marathons and was just two races away from earning his green number, a milestone he had quietly worked towards over the years. He died last week while out on a run along the Comrades route, a road that had become deeply familiar to him.
He is remembered not only for his running achievements but for the quiet, steady presence that made him deeply valued among those who knew him. Janine Nortje, vice chairperson of Westville Athletic Club, said his loss has been deeply felt within the club and the wider running community. “Kevan was more than just a runner; he was a friend, a teammate and part of our club family,” she said.
What has stood out most is how deeply this has resonated, even with those who only met Kevan briefly and in many cases, those who never met him at all. Nortje said in the days since his passing, an outpouring of support has come from across the country, reflecting the wide reach of his impact. On Saturday, runners gathered for a memorial run along the Comrades route, the road McCarogher loved.
