HARARE’S comedy scene lit up this Easter weekend as King Kandoro delivered a masterclass at 7 Arts Theatre, and if there were any doubts about his throne, he crushed them in style. Dubbed “A Very Special Show,” the night was exactly that special, electric, and unapologetically hilarious. But before the King Kandoro, real name Mukudzei Kandoro, took centre stage, the spotlight first belonged to a rising army of comedians who proved that Zimbabwe’s stand-up scene is not just alive but it’s booming.

The show opened its doors to fresh talent, giving upcoming comics a platform to warm the stage. From Mike Chipere to Munya, Patricia Putsai, Neville Farai, Tinashe Fortune and Glad Chipenzi, the line-up delivered punchline after punchline, each act digging deep into the realities of everyday Zimbabwean life. And, of course, digging on some of local celebrities.

From strict parents and school struggles to the chaos of daily survival, the comedians turned ordinary experiences into extraordinary humour. “We just tell the truth but in a way that makes people laugh at their own lives,” one of the performers quipped backstage. And, among them, one man stood taller than the rest.

Glad Chipenzi, representing Norton, was a revelation. With sharp satire and effortless delivery, he had the crowd hanging onto every word, his jokes hitting that sweet spot between wit and truth. His performance didn’t just entertain but it announced his arrival.

But just when the audience thought they had seen it all, the night took an unexpected twist. Instead of Easter eggs, the crowd got a surprise gift from King Kandoro. Enter Takura Shonhai affectionately known as Shona Prince who stormed the stage with his crowd-favourite hit “Haarore.” The theatre transformed into a mini concert, with energy levels shooting through the roof.
