The Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) says it will work with the Zambia Police Service Traffic Section to deploy officers across the country and along major highways to monitor compliance with road safety regulations during the Easter long weekend. In a statement issued in Lusaka on Thursday, the agency said the heightened enforcement was intended โ€œto enhance road safety and reduce accidents during the holiday period, which typically records increased traffic volumes as people travel to various destinations.โ€ RTSA urged motorists to observe traffic rules, including adhering to speed limits, avoiding drink-driving, ensuring vehicles are roadworthy, and making sure all passengers wear seat belts. Drivers were also advised to avoid distractions, unnecessary overtaking and driving while fatigued.

The agency called on riders and pedestrians to remain cautious and disciplined on the roads, noting that safety is a shared responsibility among all users. RTSA warned that motorists who failed to comply with traffic regulations would face penalties, adding that enforcement officers will be positioned at strategic points nationwide. The agency urged all road users to celebrate responsibly during the Easter period and prioritise safety to prevent avoidable accidents and loss of life.

Long holiday weekends typically see increased travel volumes, prompting authorities to intensify enforcement and awareness campaigns.
