A traditional leader in northern KwaZulu-Natal is under investigation following a series of serious misconduct allegations, prompting intervention by the provincial Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta). Cogta confirmed it had received multiple complaints dating back to March 2025, leading MEC Thulasizwe Buthelezi to initiate a formal process in terms of Section 23 of the KwaZulu-Natal Traditional Leadership and Governance Act. The department said an independent investigation has been instituted to assess the allegations.
“The process is aimed at testing the veracity of the allegations levelled against the Inkosi,” Cogta said in a statement. Cogta said a separate criminal matter involving the traditional leader is currently before the courts, but falls outside the MEC’s jurisdiction. The department said the investigation reflects its commitment to upholding the integrity of traditional leadership in the province.
“MEC Buthelezi remains resolute that in instances where the Code of Conduct is violated, the department will intervene decisively, without fear or favour,” the department said. The outcome of the investigation will be communicated once the process has been concluded.
