US-based female football sensation Temwa Chawinga is on the verge of returning to action, her club Kansas City (KC) Current coach Chris Amas has confirmed. The reigning back-to-back National Women’s Soccer League Most Valuable Player (MVP) and golden boot winner has been out of action since October last year with an adductor injury. She has missed several crucial matches for club and country since then, including the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) final qualification round against Angola which Malawi won 2-0 on aggregate.
But the KC Current gaffer was quoted by KCTV 5 as confirming that the 27-year-old forward is now up-and-running. “She’s feeling great. She’s gonna be training again today,” Armas said.
“We’re hopeful these next few days can ramp her up. Who knows when those first minutes come — but we do know she’s getting very close.” In Temwa’s absence, KC Current have made a poor start to the 2026 season and are currently 13th in the 16-team league, having won once and lost three. Recently, Armas said Current were keen to give Chawinga as much time as possible to recover and that the team had to be “intelligent about how they managed her return to play”.

He said: “We’re seeing her out on the training pitch these days, but it’s such a demanding season for these athletes, especially the demands that she puts into games. She’s getting close. We still are managing it the right way.” Ironically, Scorchers coach Lovemore Fazili has included Temwa in his 35-meber preliminary squad for the 2026b Fifa Women’s Series schefuled for Nairobi, Kenya from April 11 to 15.
