A vehicle believed to have been stolen in Gauteng in 2024 has been recovered in the Eastern Cape. Police confirmed a 32-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident. The vehicle, a Mini Cooper, was recovered in Mthatha on Wednesday.

“The vigilance of Ngangelizwe police officers attending to a complaint in the Orange Groove locality led to the recovery of a vehicle suspected to be stolen,” police spokesperson Captain Welile Matyolo said. “On Wednesday at about 4.30pm, police arrived at a homestead in response to a complaint. Upon arrival, they spotted a Mini Cooper with Gauteng registration plates.

Suspicious of the vehicle, they circulated its details and discovered that it had a registered CAS number from January 2024 in Johannesburg.” The suspect was arrested on the spot for being in possession of a vehicle believed to be stolen. He is expected to appear in the Mthatha magistrate’s court soon on a charge of unlawful possession of a suspected stolen vehicle. OR Tambo district commissioner Maj-Gen Norman Modishana praised officers involved in the case “for their alertness and vigilance while carrying out their policing duties”.
