Chicken Licken has made an unexpected change across all its branches, announcing that it will no longer provide rubber bands with its packaging. In a notice shared on Tuesday, the company said it had decided to discontinue rubber bands with immediate effect, adding that remaining stock would be available while supplies last. However, the timing of the announcement has raised eyebrows, with some customers questioning whether it could be an April Fools’ joke.

Others took the opportunity to weigh in on the practical impact of the decision. “Hopefully, you have worked out on the quality of your boxes,” said Lungile Mgazi Sobethu. Madeneya Abrahams said that with less money being spent on rubber bands, she hoped for bigger portions of chips.

Maybe now that you will be spending less money on rubber bands you can add a chip or two to the 5 chips you only give. While Chicken Licken has not provided a detailed explanation for the move, similar changes in the fast food industry have often been linked to packaging improvements, cost considerations or efforts to reduce waste.
