Premier Thami Ntuli confirmed on Saturday that the contract of Provincial Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has been formally renewed, averting what had been a looming leadership vacuum in the province’s police service. Speaking toThe Witnessduring a high‑profile crime prevention imbizo at Caluza Sports Ground in Pietermaritzburg, Ntuli said the renewal had been finalised in the past week, after persistent engagement with national police leadership. “On the issue of the contract renewal of Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, it has been renewed,” the premier said, describing the outcome as critical for continued stability in the KwaZulu‑Natal Police Service.
Mkhwanazi’s previous contract was due to expire on March 31, 2026, prompting concern from provincial leaders that a delay could unsettle ongoing crime‑fighting efforts. Ntuli stressed that securing Mkhwanazi’s continuation was essential as KwaZulu‑Natal battles persistent violent crime and organised syndicates. “Stable leadership in policing allows us to maintain momentum in ensuring safer communities,” he told The Witness.
The renewal comes after weeks of public calls by the premier for the contract to be expedited by National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola. Ntuli had previously urged that finalisation be fast‑tracked to avoid any disruption as the end of the month approached. Residents at the imbizo expressed relief at the news, with many citing the need for continuity in policing strategy ahead of the winter policing season.
