A group of young township entrepreneurs in Hammarsdale is being given a rare opportunity to turn their business ideas into funded enterprises through a partnership between the iCeboletu Foundation, the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA), and the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA). The initiative builds on momentum from the recent eKasi Business Fair and aims to support youth-led businesses in township communities. Twelve promising entrepreneurs have been selected to advance to a high-stakes “Pitch Your Business” session, where they will present their ideas to EDTEA.
From this group, four standout businesses will each receive R50,000 to kickstart or expand their operations. The top four will then move on to a second round, where two entrepreneurs will stand a chance to secure an additional R100,000 investment. iCeboletu Foundation CEO Nomfundo Mcoyi said the programme is more than just a competition, describing it as a critical pathway from exposure to real economic participation.
She highlighted that the initiative demonstrates the importance of collaboration between government and development organisations in tackling youth unemployment and stimulating township economies. The programme comes at a time when youth unemployment remains high, particularly in areas like Hammarsdale, where many young people struggle to access funding, mentorship, and formal markets. The pitch session is expected to take place in the coming weeks, with hopes that the model can be expanded to benefit more young entrepreneurs across KwaZulu-Natal.
