A suspected robber was apprehended by community members and later arrested by private security officers following a dramatic incident in Avoca on Saturday morning, March 21. According to a statement from Swift Private Security, the company’s control centre received a WhatsApp alert at approximately 8:30am reporting a pedestrian robbery on Avoca Road. It is alleged that a female victim was robbed of her cellphone, after which the suspect fled the scene on foot.

While en route, officers received further information indicating that a man was lying on the roadside with visible injuries. “Upon arrival, officers established that the injured male was the same suspect, who had been apprehended and assaulted by community members after the robbery,” the statement read.

It is understood that community members pursued the suspect after the incident. During the chase, the suspect reportedly fled towards Beekhary Road and into a nearby bush area. “While being pursued, the suspect was seen attempting to change his clothing, believed to be an effort to avoid identification after committing the crime.
