Four suspected robbers linked to a string of violent crimes were shot and killed during a shootout with police in Bellair, Durban on Monday afternoon. KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said the suspects were wanted for multiple serious offences, including murder, attempted murder of police officers, car and truck hijackings, and business and house robberies. According to Netshiunda, the suspects had been terrorising communities in Mbumbulu, KwaMakhutha, Ntuzuma and Folweni.
When officers attempted to stop the suspects, they allegedly refused to comply, triggering a high-speed chase. The pursuit ended at a house believed to have been used by the suspects as a hideout, where a shootout broke out between police and the suspects. “All four suspects were shot and fatally wounded during the exchange of fire,” Netshiunda said.
A fifth suspect managed to evade arrest and is being sought. A manhunt has been launched to locate and apprehend him. No police officers were injured during the incident.
