A man has been arrested after he was found in possession of drugs worth about R8 million at a residential complex in Somerset Park, Umhlanga. KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Sergeant Thenjiswa Ngcobo said officers acted on intelligence about drug dealing in the area. She said officers conducted surveillance at the complex on Ilchester Avenue in Canterbury before spotting the man just after 12am on Monday.

“The suspect was spotted carrying a backpack. Police stopped and searched him, and a substance suspected to be gold cocaine was found,” Ngcobo said. Police also seized an undisclosed amount of money and three cellphones.

A 62-year-old man was also arrested for possession of drugs and dealing in drugs. He is expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court. In a separate incident, a 63-year-old man was arrested following reports of theft and other offences.
