The community of Cinderella Park marched to the Pietermaritzburg City Hall on Friday morning to demand that the electricity transformer in their area be replaced, almost a year after it was removed. The residents said the transformer caught fire. It was then removed, and they were promised it would be replaced.

A resident, Priscilla Seselee, said they are fed up with paying for electricity they are not receiving. “We are struggling here without electricity, yet we still have to pay a bill that amounts to thousands,” said Seselee. In a memorandum that the residents prepared to hand over to Msunduzi Municipality Mayor Mzimkhulu Thebolla, the residents said their issues have been going on for two years.

They said this has had a severe impact on the community. “Education has collapsed as learners study in darkness. Crime has escalated, leading to an increase in theft, violence, and insecurity.” The Msunduzi Municipality has yet to respond to a media query from The Witness.
