National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) Trust has expressed satisfaction with voter turnout in Dedza Mtakataka Constituency by-election on March 17 2026. The constituency had 24 320 registered voters and 12 943 turned out to vote. In an inter v i ew on Wednesday, Nice Dedza district programmes manager Vincent Kalawa said the organisation in collaboration with other civil society groups conducted extensive voter civic education ahead of the polls.
“We are impressed with the turnout. I visited several polling centres and people were coming out in large numbers to vote,” he said. Kalawa also said while some may not have voted for personal reasons, the overall response was encouraging.
“Ci v i c – educat i o n i s a continuous process that prepares peopl e to be informed. In this case, it was well conducted,” he said. Dedza district elections officer Austin Mapando also expressed satisfaction with the voter turnout, saying it reflects growing public confidence in electoral processes.

On Tuesday, Ma lawi Elec toral Commi s s i on conducted by-elections in four constituencies, namely Dedza Mtakataka, Blantyre West, Rumphi Central and Nkhotakota Liwaladzi as well as nine wards across the country. Unofficial results in Dedza Mtakataka Constituency showed Malawi Congress Par ty candidate Patrick Bandawe was poised for victory.
