People in Traditional Authority Mwenewenya in Chitipa District have urged the government to begin distribution of farm inputs under the Farm Inputs Subsidy Programme (Fisp) during the dry season for beneficiaries to access them without challenges. Wenya Area Development Committee chairperson Wanangwa Kayira said this on Monday at Wenya during the orientation of community action group members, traditional leaders and area and village development committees on Social Accountability tools. He said residents faced difficulties in accessing farm inputs this season due to poor road networks and rain-damaged roads.
“We had problems with Fisp this year because many beneficiaries did not redeem their farm inputs as they were not delivered in time due to poor and muddy roads. Food is a human right issue; hence, it has to be accessible at all times,” said Kayira. Village head Bwanayobe echoed Kayira’s concerns, noting that some farmers resorted to buying fake maize seeds.
Chitipa district director of agriculture Lumbani Msiska said the district is among the top three on farm inputs redemption rate, averaging 89 percent despite the challenges. “As of March 13 2026, Fisp beneficiaries have redeemed 0.06 percent of maize seed, 84.69 percent of NPK fertiliser and 93.65 percent of Urea,” he said.
