Sunday is the day that Con Malherbe and Jared Hinde take off on The Untamed, as the Absa Cape Epic — one of the world’s toughest mountain bike challenges. And they’ll be wearing the colours of Coffeeberry, which has come on board as their main sponsor. The local coffee shop brand has a long association with cycling.
“We prided ourselves in our Cascades shop being the closest coffee shop to the first mountain bike World Championships in Africa, in 2013, which was fittingly won by local hero ‘Greatest Of All Time — G.O.A.T’ Greg Minnaar,” said Malherbe who is Coffeeberry’s founder and owner. Since then, we enjoyed many of these World Cup events coming to the Cascades. The first was in 2009 and further events happened in consecutive years until 2014.
Cycling topics have featured among the many True Story Tuesday evenings Coffeeberry has offered to evening customers: Greg Minnaar himself — who has been crowned Downhill World Cup Champion winner four times — 2003, 2012, 2013 and 2021 — and the Downhill World Cup winner three times, in 2001, 2005 and 2008. The championship event happens once a year and the winner on the day tops the podium while the winner of the cup is a series of events with the winner determined by whoever gets the most points. Another speaker was Tour de France commentator legend Phil Liggett. The Cape Epic is not the first event in which a cycling team has enjoyed sponsorship from Coffeeberry
