A staff room and a Grade 8 classroom were set alight at Mvunulo Secondary School in Taylor’s Halt this week, leading to police opening a case of malicious damage to property. According to school governing body member Linda Ngcobo, they believe the fire on Monday night was started deliberately. We don’t remember having an enemy at the school.

Ngcobo said books in the staffroom were set alight through a window, while desks and the ceiling boards in the classroom were also torched. She added that the suspects gained access to the school premises after cutting the fence and breaking a burglar gate. Despite the damage, teaching and learning resumed on Tuesday, with pupils being accommodated in the school hall.

“This is a huge setback. We are trying to fix the school but people are vandalising it,” Ngcobo said. As a community, we need to play a role in protecting the school. uMgungundlovu District SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Sifiso Gwala confirmed that the incident is under investigation.
