By Crime and Courts Reporter – A 48-year-old Greendale man on Tuesday lost US$40 000 in cash and valuables to thieves while buying lunch in Highlands, Harare — in yet another reminder of the growing risk of leaving money or expensive items in unattended vehicles The man, identified only as Evans, had parked his vehicle at around 3pm outside a restaurant, alongside a pre-cast wall, before going inside to buy food Over an hour later, he returned to find the rear quarter glass on the right passenger side smashed On inspection, he discovered that an Apple MacBook Pro Max laptop and the cash were missing
Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Luckmore Chakanza confirmed the incident “Police are investigating a theft-from-car case in Highlands Total value stolen is US$41 000 and nothing was recovered,” Insp Chakanza said Police have urged members of the public not to leave money, laptops, or other valuables in vehicles — even for short periods — as such crimes are on the rise in Harare
