Despite my short stay, I feel like I got a true understanding of the bohemian aesthetic and laidback vibe of the hotel, which felt like it had been transferred from the lively Rosebank neighbourhood. I think it speaks to the strength and skill of the hospitality company when stepping foot inside the Hyde Johannesburg, you’re not only comfortable with that South African hospitality, but you also get an immediate sense of their identity. I had not planned to stay at the Hyde Johannesburg hotel at all until a delayed flight from Perth meant I would only be able to catch my flight to Cape Town the next morning.

However, as life would have it, I ended up at the hotel and was glad I did because by the time I checked out, my only thought was that I would have liked to have stayed there longer. Upon arrival, walking from the Gautrain stop to the hotel, you’re treated to the vibrancy of what makes Johannesburg special. The atmosphere, the friendliness and thriving nightlife all contribute to the allure of the city, which in turn, speaks to the allure of the hotel.

The Hyde Johannesburg has 131 guest rooms that balance urban sophistication with bohemian, earthy design. The Hyde is redefining what it means to work, stay and play, which is why it seems to have connected with business travellers, digital nomads, and holidaymakers. I ran into another guest and struck up a brief conversation, during which we touched on the hotel.

She had shared that she loves staying at the hotel when in town, as its thumping atmosphere was a perk. This was on display when, even during a late-night check-in, guests were caught in deep and voluminous conversation. If you’re looking for a quiet stay, it can be disorientating, but personally, after a long flight, the atmosphere felt rejuvenating.
