A dark cloud of grief has settled over the Woodlands community in Pietermaritzburg following the brutal murder of a 15-year-old pupil and her mother at their flat on Tuesday evening. The mother was stabbed multiple times and died shortly after arriving home from work and discovering her only child unresponsive at their residence in Woodroffe flats. Family and community members were left devastated after attempting to save the lives of Brooklyn Hemmero and her mother, Christina “Nikki” Joseph (34), who were strangled and stabbed, allegedly by a man known to Joseph and Hemmero.

Relatives and neighbours rushed to the flat shortly after 8pm after receiving a call that Brooklyn was unresponsive and her mother had been stabbed multiple times. Brooklyn was rushed to Northdale Hospital, where attempts to resuscitate her were unsuccessful. Her mother, who was found lying in a pool of blood, died en route to hospital.

Brooklyn’s paternal aunt, Cherryl Hemmero, was overcome with grief and said the family is devastated by the loss. I got a call telling us to rush to the flat because Brooklyn was unresponsive and her mother had been stabbed. My brother and I rushed there.

Christina was lying in a pool of blood. We put her into the car, but she died as we were getting to the hospital. “My brother rushed Brooklyn to hospital, and they tried to resuscitate her, but she had already died,” said Hemmero.

She said the family is still trying to come to terms with what transpired. “We are shattered. My brother, Brooklyn’s dad, could not sleep.

He lost his daughter, whom he loved dearly. He and Christina co-parented very well.
