MultiChoice has pulled the plug on streaming service Showmax. An email, sent to customers on Thursday morning, said that following a comprehensive review, the Showmax Board has made the decision to discontinue the Showmax service in the near future. “This decision reflects our focus on strengthening our overall digital offering and ensuring long-term sustainability in an increasingly competitive streaming environment.” The email added that at the moment, there will be no interruption to the current service.
“You can continue streaming as usual, and no action is required from you at this time.” “We are working on plans to ensure clear communication and a smooth transition when the time comes. We will share further details well in advance, including timelines and any future steps, should they be required.” In a statement, MultiChoice said: “MultiChoice, part of CANAL+ SA, today announces the forthcoming discontinuation of the Showmax service, following a comprehensive review of its streaming activities.” The announcement marks the end of a significant chapter in Africa’s streaming industry. When Showmax launched in 2015, it was positioned as the continent’s home-grown streaming platform, offering a mix of local productions and international content to compete with global platforms. MultiChoice added that ongoing financial losses within the business played a key role in the decision.
