Residents across large parts of KwaZulu-Natal have been warned to prepare for severe thunderstorms accompanied by heavy rain, damaging winds, lightning and hail expected to hit the province. The South African Weather Service (Saws) issued a yellow level 1 warning for Thursday and a level 4 warning for Friday It stated that Thursday’s storms were likely to affect the western and southern parts of the province, with the potential for localised flooding and infrastructure damage. The level 4 warning forecast severe storms across the province on Friday, except in the north-eastern parts.
The warnings apply to a wide range of municipalities, including areas in Alfred Duma, Newcastle, eThekwini, Richmond, uMngeni, Ray Nkonyeni, Msunduzi and Greater Kokstad. “Severe thunderstorms accompanied by heavy downpours, damaging winds, excessive lightning and hail resulting in localised flooding and damage to infrastructure and settlements are expected,” the weather service said. Authorities warned that the conditions could lead to slippery roads, poor visibility and minor vehicle accidents, particularly in areas prone to flooding.
Low-lying bridges and roads may also become dangerous during heavy rainfall. Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel in vulnerable areas and to stay indoors where possible during severe storms. “Take caution or avoid travelling on bridges and roads in low-lying areas as these may be susceptible to flooding,” the weather service said.
