The African Union on Saturday has called for restraint and urgent de-escalation following military strikes by the United States (US) and Israel against Iran. African Union (AU) Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf warned that the escalation could have far-reaching global consequences. “Further escalation threatens to worsen global instability, with serious implications for energy markets, food security, and economic resilience— particularly in Africa, where conflict and economic pressures remain acute.” The strikes come amid heightened tensions pitting Washington and Tel Aviv against Tehran, with regional media reporting retaliatory missile fire and fears of a broader confrontation across the Gulf.

The AU reiterated that lasting peace can only be achieved through diplomacy, as the international community monitors developments closely. Meanwhile, several African airlines, including Ethiopian Airlines and Kenya Airways, have announced flight cancellations to Tel Aviv and Beirut amid growing security concerns. African citizens in the Middle East region have also been urged to exercise caution as tensions continue to rise.
