2 dead in Rovos Rail crash in Namibia

The Rovos Rail train heading south from Windhoek, Namibia, derailed near Naute, approximately 285km from Ariamsvlei and the South African border, earlier today. According to a media statement issued by Rovos Rail, the cause of the derailment was a washaway of the last span of a bridge, resulting in the loss of two locomotives and two utility coaches. “The automatic brake system stopped the train to prevent further damage,” the statement reads.

“However, it is with profound sadness that we confirm the passing of our Rovos driver and the TransNamib pilot. We extend our deepest condolences to their families, friends and colleagues.” Rovos Rail confirmed that no injuries were sustained by any passengers or other staff members. Buses have been arranged to transport guests to Upington.

They will then be flown to Cape Town and personally met by members of the family that owns Rovos Rail. “We sincerely regret this occurrence but, rest assured, the safety and well-being of our guests and staff are paramount.” According toThe Namibian, the accident occurred at around 05h00. TransNamib confirmed in a media statement that chief executive Desmond van Jaarsveld said the company’s emergency response plan was activated immediately, and teams were dispatched to the scene.
