Young people and professionals have been urged to sharpen their communication skills following a Public Speaking Masterclass organised by AC Communications on Saturday in Blantyre.

The event attracted 40 participants, including young girls, college students, women and professionals.

Speaking during the event, Angel Chima, the facilitator, said she organised the training to address young people’s lack of confidence and fear of public speaking, which often cost them valuable opportunities.

“We need to empower the youth to have confidence so they do not struggle to express themselves in public spaces. When an opportunity comes, it is too late to prepare. We are preparing them now so they are ready,” she said. “If you can speak, you can influence, and if you can influence, you can change lives.”

The masterclass covered overcoming stage fright, effective communication, executive presence, understanding social anxiety and structuring persuasive professiona

Among the participants was  Vanguard Life Assurance Limited managing director Lillian Moyo, whose company sponsored women to attend.

“My company sponsored a few ladies because we believe learning is a continuous process. I always take time to update myself,” she said.

She described communication as central to career growth. “Communication is the backbone of any human interaction and learning how to communicate effectively is key to progress in one’s career,” she said, adding that she gained practical skills on overcoming anxiety and structuring speeches while remaining adaptable.

Student participant from Kalibu Academy Joy Chaika said nervousness had been her main challenge as deputy head girl.

“I learnt how to engage my audience, calm myself, prepare for presentations and handle social anxiety. I believe I will be a better public speaker,” she said.

She noted that communication skills are often undervalued in Malawi, yet they are key to sharing ideas and fostering growth.
