Local soccer enthusiasts will have a chance to watch the South African senior men’s team in KZN next month. The national soccer governing body, SA Football Association (Safa), this week officially announced that Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium and the DHL Cape Town Stadium will host Bafana Bafana’s two international friendly matches against Panama next month. The Zulu Kingdom’s passionate soccer followers will be able to watch Bafana Bafana in action against the visitors on March 27 before facing the Central American country in the second game in Cape Town on March 31.
The matches form a critical component of head coach Hugo Broos’ build-up programme ahead of the Fifa World Cup, which will be hosted by the United States of America, Canada and Mexico from June 11 to July 19, this year. Bafana Bafana return to Durban for the first time since they were held to a goalless draw by Zimbabwe in a tense 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifier played at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in October in 2025. The South Africans threw everything they had at the Zimbabweans, but luck was not on their side on the day.
However, Bafana Bafana picked themselves up and completed qualification after they beat Rwanda 3-0 in an exhilarating match in Mbombela. According to Safa, the game against Panama is a dual-city World Cup preparation series for the 2026 Fifa World Cup. A few months ago head coach Broos made it clear to Safa that friendlies against strong opposition will give players proper preparation ahead of the global event.

Broos’ troops will play the opening match of the tournament against Mexico. “The matches form a critical component of head coach Hugo Broos’ build-up programme ahead of the global tournament, which will be hosted by the United States of America, Canada and Mexico from June 11 to July 19, 2026. “Panama — currently ranked 33rd in the world — were considered to provide high-quality opposition. The Central American side offers a competitive, physical and tactically disciplined test that aligns closely with the level Bafana Bafana will face at the Fifa World Cup,” said Safa’s official statement.
