Zulu King Misuzulu kaZwelithini renewed his call for KwaZulu-Natal to be renamed KwaZulu yesterday and signalled plans to seek amendments to the KwaZulu-Natal Ingonyama Trust Amendment Act 9 of 1997 to allow him to appoint members of the Ingonyama Trust Board. Speaking during the official opening of the KZN Legislature at Woodburn Stadium in Pietermaritzburg, the King announced the appointment of retired Judge Isaac Madondo and Advocate Thembeka Ngcukaitobi to lead the process of renaming the province,reportsThe Witness. It was called KwaZulu.

He said he discovered this province and named it Natal. “I am making a call for this province to be renamed KwaZulu,” the king said. In terms of the Ingonyama Trust Act, members of the Ingonyama Trust Board are appointed by the minister of Rural Development and Land Reform, while Parliament exercises oversight over the trust. However, the king said he wants the act amended to allow him to appoint members of the board and for oversight to be transferred to the KZN Legislature. “It is the KZN Legislature which should exercise oversight on the Ingonyama Trust,” he said.
